OUTBOARD
Typically outboard engines can be run much later in the year as they are not as susceptible to freezing and cracking. A bad lower unit seal causing water to get into the lower unit could be the exception to this. There is some great fall fishing and color watching out there so you don't have to cut your season so short if you own an outboard.
Please note: if an engine is turned over when below 32 degrees you run a risk of damaging your water pump impeller as it may be frozen to the side walls.

INBOARD OUTBOARD
Water freezes at 32 degrees. This may seem obvious, however, every year it seems we have people with frozen and cracked engines and they all say "but it didn't get that cold." Your engine can be damaged the first time it freezes and it doesn't have to get colder then 32.
You can drain the water in the engine to get by the first cold snap and not completely winterize your boat. Refer to your owner's manual for directions. Make very sure you find every drain plug and that you get the "proper" amount of water out as sand or debris can block the drain hole causing water to be trapped in the engine.
